Thoughts on Dr Sun Mei

She is fucking badass. I mean, she says she is not a survivor and of course Roberta Warren is correct when she says “and yet you survived” but I feel she deserves more than that one line.

She lived under protection that whole time in Bejing. Sure, she had to have seen Zombies close up but I kinda doubt that she ever had to really fight on her own for her life. She must have gotten training though, obviously. But it’s always different if you do something in theory or because your life depends on it.

Dr. Sun Mei didn’t think she would be capable of surviving on her own. She thought the survival of our group must have been due to an anomaly, probably due to Murphy. If you think survival is only possible with a big group of soldier, high tech and huge walls the story of a ragtag group of mostly normal people travelling through the post apocalyptic wasteland must be pretty inspiring and initmidating if you thought, it was due to some biological anomaly.

We don’t know much about her life though. What made her pursue virology? She talked about her ancestors, how long is her family dead? Did she have a husband? I kinda doubt it. She obviously had feelings for that Lieutenant who died. Now she learned that not only the soldiers closest to her are dead, but every other close person left behind on that ship is DEAD.

She is left alone in a strange country, forced to only hear and speak her second language with no way to ever go back to a country where she feels truly home. Sure, our gang feels like family. But she barely knows them personally. They have yet to get to know each other for real.
I know though that Dr Sun Mei is much more badass than she thinks.

She just learned that she was alone and yet, when she is alone in that basement, at the wrong end of a gun of a psychopathic murderer she doesn’t freeze up. She doesn’t give up. She could easily have said, fuck it, I’m alone, everyone I ever cared for is dead and I will never see Bejing again. But she didn’t. Put on the spot she made up a good plan  for survival, went with it and won. Roberta, Addy or Hector probably would’ve tried to fight him then and there, grabbed his gun and tackled him. Dr. Sun isn’t an experienced fighter and she acted accordingly. I’m so proud of her.

Also, that scene where they get to the radio. She had no qualms about killing that Z. Addy and Doc were like “we promised so we won’t kill it” but not Dr. Sun Mei. She knew it wasn’t likely for that mailman to find out about that kill before they are gone. I loved her so much in that moment. But then, when they were in that room, her fight with Addy. Like, she is so fiercely loyal to her people on that ship. She would’ve died if she had to.

I feel like there was sexual tension between those two. Obviously Addy was mad as hell for Dr. Sun insisting on contacting her ship instead of Citizen Z. But as soon as she learned what happened to her ship she was so gentle when she pulled Dr. Sun from the chair to operate the radio.

She is so pragmatic, I love her.

^^Everything above.
