Little do you know
I need a little more time

“Hey,” Ben said, and you could hear the smile on his face as his arms wound around your waist. You grinned when he pressed a soft kiss to your neck, turning around in his hold and wrapping your arms around his neck.

You leaned forward and tilted your head to the side, gently letting your lips meet his.

Ben kissed you back, his lips moving and melding like they were made for yours. You pulled away after a moment and pressed one more kiss to the corner of his mouth before hefting your gun a little higher on your shoulder.

“What was that for?” Ben asked curiously, letting his eyes flick open as he raised an eyebrow at you.

You shrugged. “I like you, a lot, and I really like kissing you.” You answered, choosing your words carefully.

You had been with each other for almost two years (when you first met him, you absolutely hated him because your father did and he pushed his views on you, but then you started talking to Ben and you realized that he was brave and smart and amazing) but neither of you had said the l-word yet. It was a big deal for you, and in the beginning, you had wanted to make sure that you really did love him before you told him.

Now, you knew that you loved him, but you were trying to wait to tell him until the moment was right (you didn’t know when that moment would happen, you couldn’t exactly have candlelit dinners during an alien invasion, but you wanted to tell him in a way that was at least a little romantic).

Ben smiled widely, and before you could protest, he had wrapped his arms around you, lifted you into the air, and spun you around.

“B-ben!” You barely managed to get the words out in between loud, bright bursts of laughter. “Put me down!”

Ben shook his head and pressed his forehead to yours. “Never.”

He stopped spinning you at least, but he still kept you firmly in his arms. His gaze flicked from your eyes to your lips, and lingered there for a moment before he brought his gaze back to your eyes.

“__y/n__, I-” Whatever Ben was about to say got cut off when your father stomped over, ripped you out of Ben’s arms, and stood in front of you, blocking you from Ben’s view.

“You stay away from her, you god damn razorback!” Pope said harshly, and even you were surprised at the cruel word choice. You thought your father had been warming up to Ben, but apparently you were wrong.

“Dad!” You said in disbelief, glaring at the back of your father’s head.

Ben shot you an apologetic glance before holding his hands up placatingly. “Sorry, sir. I’ll leave.”

“Damn right, you will.” Pope sneered, and you felt the ridiculous urge to punch your father right in the face. You grabbed his wrist and pulled him into the nearest tent, which you were relived to see was empty. Neither of you noticed that Ben hadn’t actually left like he said he was going to. Instead, he was standing a few feet away from the tattered tent and trying to figure out if he should go inside.

Ben looked at the tent flap warily as the yelling started.

“God damn it, will you let me talk for two fucking minutes?” You bit out, crossing your arms and glowering at your father.

“Fine, talk. Tell me all about how you’re in love with the freak.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” You asked, narrowing your eyes at him. “I thought you liked Ben!”

He chuckled, but there was no humor in it. “No, I was being civil to him. I still don’t like him.”

You tossed your hands into the air. “What is your problem with him? He’s nice, he’s smart, he’s brave, what more do you want?”

“He’s an alien, __y/n__! What if he snaps someday and he hurts you? How would I be able to live with myself if you died?”

Your eyes softened slightly. “First off, he’s not an alien. He got harnessed, yes, but he’s not an alien and I don’t want you to ever even think that he is. Secondly, he’s not going to hurt me. Have you not noticed that he’s always doing everything in his power to keep me safe? He doesn’t want me to get hurt anymore than you do. Finally, dad, I love you, but you can’t stop me from dating Ben. I love him, okay? He’s not gonna ‘snap’, he would never hurt me, and he is most certainly not going to kill me.”

“But-”

“No buts. I’m not a little girl anymore. You can’t keep choosing who I hang out with. Ben has put himself in danger more times than I can count to keep me safe, and if that means nothing to you, that’s your problem. I love him. And nothing you can say will change my mind.”

You stormed out of the tent without giving him a chance to respond, and you blinked in surprise when Ben’s arms were instantly around you and his lips were crushed against yours in a bruising kiss.

“I love you too.” Ben murmured, breaking the kiss just long enough to utter those words before his mouth was back on yours. You smiled into the kiss, winding your arms around his neck and kissing him back just as fiercely. You tried to convey just how much you loved him, and Ben could feel it. It was definitely the most passionate kiss you had ever shared, and you couldn’t help your smile from widening when you broke the kiss and noticed that Ben’s breathing was as labored as yours.

“I love you.” You whispered, pressing one more kiss to his lips before continuing. “I know you already know, but I’ve been waiting so long to say that and oh my god it feels amazing.”

Ben’s answering smile was soft and gentle, and you thought your heart was going to burst. “Can’t be as amazing as you.” Ben said, and you couldn’t help the laugh from bubbling out of your throat.

“You’re such a dork, oh god.” You mumbled, and Ben shot you an affronted look. “But you’re my dork,” You remedied and kissed away the frown that made its way onto his face. “And I love you. A lot.”

Ben slowly let his frown blossom into a smile. “I love you a lot, too.”

Your hand twined with Ben’s, and you rested your head on his shoulder as you walked away, completely unaware of your father who had exited the tent and was smiling ever-so-slightly at the two of you.

Tom was more than a little confused when later that day Pope walked up to him, clapped him on the shoulder, said “I guess we’re family now, huh?”, and strolled off without another word.

Lay your head on me
So lay your head on me
‘Cause little do you know
I love you till the sun dies
