I’d Rather Be Alone (Peter Maximoff x OFC)

Just a little drabble that came to mind, based off the song “Entertainment” by Phoenix.

She loved isolation.

She loved the loneliness that came with being ‘independent’ & ‘mature’. She was always a ‘loner’, never having many friends & the friends she did have never stayed her friends for very long. They came & went, like the morning train she took for work & university.

It was a Friday night like any other. She had one of her old rock vinyls spinning on her small record player, a gift from one of those friends who’s friendship only survived a season. A warm, black mug of peppermint tea was cradled in her soft hands, one of her most feminine features that she’s grown to hate & love. Her eyes trailed along the geometric rug under her coffee table, thoughts swimming & splashing in her mind like sea lions during a feeding. She let a faint smile grace her lips when her eyes registered a small, gray rectangle on the rug, her mind instantly switching gears to think about him.

Peter.

Peter was one of her friends, one she hoped wouldn’t disappear like the rest, but feared could vanish as fast as he had appeared into her life.

His mutation definitely didn’t ease her anxiety of that worry.

The two had met on the train one afternoon. She had been on her way home from university. Charles had sent Peter to get some groceries for the school & unfortunately for him, with the list Charles gave him, there was no way he could run with all that food. So, he resorted to the train, since he didn’t have a license nor the patience to learn how to drive (he could never drive as fast as he ran, anyway) & there she was. Dressed entirely in black, yet appearing so fragile & nervous, she asked him if he needed help with all those bags filled with groceries & Peter wasn’t the type to reject help from any girl, but especially not from one with a Galaga shirt.

After that day, Peter started riding the train more often, hoping he would run into her again. As luck would have it, he ran into her a few days later, while she was on her way to school. The way she gave him a soft smile when she recognized him made his heart melt, but when she sat next to him, too, he thought he might burst.

That was a few months ago, & now, they saw each other almost every day. Peter walked with her to class & sometimes had breakfast with her on campus. He even helped her study for a test a couple times because he was so good in Physics. He also came & visited her at work. She worked at a record store in town & he always came by to “browse the new selections”, as he claimed, but in reality, he only came to see her.

When she wasn’t at school or work or studying, she frequented Xavier’s with Peter. He was so excited to bring her to school so she could meet all his friends that he vibrated the whole time, that first day. She was instantly accepted into his squad, although she tried not to get too close with them, for fear she would lose them all.

Although her visits to Xavier’s were quite frequent, Peter had yet to visit her in her small yet cozy apartment. Peter had wanted to visit her so many times, to see how far her independence & ambition had taken her, but she had never offered & Peter never asked. His mother taught him manners, afterall.

As she sat there, her tea getting cold between her always freezing hands, she debated calling the silver boy & inviting him over for the first time. She looked around her home, deciding she didn’t have much to clean & could easily whip up some nice comfort food.

Shaking softly, her clammy hands set the mug down onto the table & she pulled out her phone. When she found Peter’s contact picture, she smiled, but her thumb hesitantly hovered over the “Dial” key. She rehearsed what she was going to say probably twenty times before she finally called him.

He picked up after the first ring & when he heard it was her, his voice increased in volume slightly in excitement. She couldn’t help but laugh a little at that & her nervousness instantly faded. He eagerly accepted her invitation for a visit & promised to be over in an hour. Hanging up, her smile widened as she leaped excitedly into the kitchen, eager to make something in honor of her guest.

While she had dinner cooking, she looked through her closet, changing from her pajamas into a T-shirt & jeans. She had already removed her make-up, much to her dismay, but didn’t have the effort to reapply it, so she washed her face & let it be. She quickly combed her hair, pulling it out of its messy ponytail & tried to smooth out a few wild hairs, but to no avail, giving up after several minutes.

She tidied up the few messy areas around her apartment. Her apartment was almost always spotless, aside from when she had one of her bad days & the depression & anxiety overpowered her OCD so much so that she just couldn’t bring herself to tidy up. This week was a fairly good week; however, & she hadn’t had one of her bad days for over a month now. She wondered if it was the new medication her therapist had prescribed her or her friendship with the silly, silver boy who had helped with that. He was always so patient & accepting with her, & it never ceased to amaze her. Perhaps it was his own ADHD that made him relate to her, but he was always kind & supportive with her. It really soothed her anxiety & made her more comfortable, not just around him, but around others & her environment, too.

The quick & sharp knock at her door made her smile once more & she waited a few seconds before she went to open it. Nervous smiles were exchanged before she let him inside. He instantly went into the kitchen, & her smile only widened as she closed the door & went to enjoy dinner with the most amazing person she’s ever had the honor to call her friend.
