Actually sperm contain a segment in the “neck” (the part of their “tail” that is directly connected to the head of the sperm) of their flagellum called a midpiece, which contains filament-like structures surrounded by mitochondria. Technically speaking, this acts as a spine, similar to notochords (this is a precursor to spines composed of bone or it acts as a spine in some vertebrates) in some species, which means they’re technically not “boneless”
