Soulmates (?)

You press your open mouth to Loki’s bare chest. His hand tangles in your hair, and he pulls your sweaty body against yours. All you can feel is Loki’s skin and the sheets on the bed.

You close your eyes, focusing on Loki’s thumb moving up and down your shoulder. It’s comforting. Loki- even after his change of heart- scared so many people. But you only ever feel at ease, safe, with him. You’re incapable of anything but content when he’s in your company.

“I love you.” Loki says. You’re as close to him as physically possible, but Loki still manages to tighten his grip around you. “…So much.” Loki trails kisses across your temple. You hum, placing your hand on his sternum. “Love you.” Loki keeps saying.

You adore this version of him: Stripped down. All Loki does is keep his guard up, reacting with carefully planned actions. But with you, behind closed doors, it comes crashing down. You’ll never be entirely sure why you’re the one Loki shows his true self to; but you’ll always be grateful you’re the one he’s chosen.

“Do you believe in soulmates?” you ask. It’s a stupid question, this you know, but it had slipped out.

“What do you mean love?” Loki asks, threading his fingers through your own.

“Just… This. This is so perfect Loki.” the god kisses your knuckles. You smile at this, but continue on. “I can’t imagine being with anyone else. I can’t imagine any reality where we aren’t together. I know that if I were with someone else, it wouldn’t be as real as when I’m with you. Not even that- It would just be less. Everyone else is less.” you peer into Loki’s eyes, which are giving you all the attention in the world. “I’m sorry, I’m rambling.”

“And you know I love it when you do.” Loki tells you, kissing your nose. You smile.

It’s silent for a moment.

“It’s not that I can’t imagine a world without you; or a world where I’m not with you.” Loki whispers. “It’s that I don’t want to.” Loki grips your hand, tight, and it almost hurts. “We came so close to missing each other… I’ve made mistakes, Y/N, but had I not made them, I would never had come to Midgard. I’d never have met you… It’s a thought I can scarcely bear.” he swallows. “Soulmates? No. It’s a selfish thought, the idea the universe has planned your life out for you. But I believe in choice.” Loki tilts your chin up, capturing your mouth in a long embrace that takes any air out of you.

“And I choose you.”
