– You know what Bucky needs more than a significant other? An amazing, fucking friend
– Yes, he has Steve
– But Steve puts pressure on Bucky to be the man he was back in the day
– Even though Steve doesn’t mean to, it happens
– So when Bucky meets Y/N and she wants nothing but to be his friend, Bucky melts
– Y/N helps Bucky understand all the culture he’s missed without overwhelming him
– She does it naturally, just letting him join when she’s watching her favorite shows or movies or asks to borrow a book after he sees her reading it
– In return, Bucky teaches her self-defense and little random things (auto mechanics, survival skills, how to drive stick, how to dance properly)
– The two of them become inseparable
– Steve sometimes gets a little jealous of the two of them, feeling slightly replaced
– But Sam pointed out how good of a sign it was that Bucky found a friend like Y/N in his new life
– To make things even better, Y/N always makes sure to invite Steve to everything
– But Steve learns to navigate when to accept and pass on the invitations
– Tony is the most guilty of making pressuring comments about how Bucky and Y/N should just date already
– That always earns him a glare from everyone, especially from Steve and Natasha
– But Y/N knows how to stick up for herself, “The idea that men and women cannot be friends is so outdated and makes you look small-minded, Tony. Which is pretty entertaining for someone that claims to be so smart. If men only see women as their mother or someplace to put their dick… it says a lot more about them than anything else.”
– It always shuts Tony up
– Bucky usually blushes at Y/N’s passionate and vulgar defense
– But Bucky also feels relieved that Y/N doesn’t want anything more than friendship
– A romantic relationship isn’t something he’s ready for. Honestly, he might never be ready for it
– But even if he was, Bucky and Y/N are friends. And sometimes, friendship is more powerful than any romantic relationship
– When it comes to Y/N’s love life, Bucky is always very judgemental about the boys
– It is not jealousy. It mostly comes from a place of disgust for how the majority of men treat women nowadays
– Picture a protective big brother, but a big brother who was from a dating culture that could not feel more foreign
– Sam had to explain dating trends and habits to Bucky after he was appalled Y/N’s date didn’t pick her up from her apartment or walk her home afterward
– Bucky’s high expectations for Y/N sometimes annoyed her, but she realized that maybe she had lowered her standards far too much
– She quickly realizes that she needs not only the stamp of approval from Bucky, before taking a relationship to the next level, but from basically all of the Avengers
– Y/N makes sure Bucky feels like he has a group of friends and family (even though he still had Steve and the Avengers)
– She invites him over to her family’s Thanksgiving every year, she makes him carry 5 pumpkins just for her to carve before Halloween, she even forces him to join her friends’ Secret Santa party
– In return, Bucky invites her to all the Avenger parties and gets dibs on 4th of July since it’s always Steve’s birthday party too
– Movie marathons happen at least once a month
– But the movie selection goes 50/50… so they switch off between Y/N’s favorites to Bucky’s (which are almost all from the 30s/40s until he gets thoroughly educated on modern cinema)
– Bucky realizes how lucky he is to have a best friend outside of the Avengers, who just sees him as the new Bucky
– She teases him, remains honest, and makes sure he never feels alone
– But more than anything, she makes him laugh at her ridiculous tendencies
– In return, Bucky protects her and reminds her of her worth
– Without realizing it, he proves that there are good men with kind hearts still in the world
