happy mother’s day @ all the mamas!!
warnings: NO INFINITY WAR SPOILERS, abandonment, steve rogers being a fucking gem of a man.
You were sat in your apartment, television playing some game show, the canny laughs echoing the room. It would have been funny, of course, but you weren’t watching it. Your eyes were staring somewhat blankly at the screen, not taking in any of it at all.
Your mind was elsewhere.
It was in a New York back alley, watching a car drive away. Watching your mother drive that car away after she’d told you to sit and wait for her to come back, some part of your seven-year-old mind knowing that she wouldn’t.
A pair of feet stopped in front of you in the alley, and a young man knelt. He had a friendly face, a glint in his eye, a warm smile on his lip.
A hand on your knee pulled you to the present. There, kneeling in front of you like that fateful day eleven years ago, was that friendly face of Steve Rogers. It was a little older now, a strong beard hugging his jaw, a less hopeful light in his eyes after seeing so much of the world.
“Hey,” he smiled at you, a sad smile. An understanding one. A loving one. His hand opened out to you like it did all that time ago. “Wanna go get some ice cream?”
