- Loki being on the side of the Avengers came with a lot of tension
- particularly when it came to his past
- ninety percent of the team remained uncertain of him
- even once he started helping out with missions and was very obviously on your side
- the others couldn’t help but think he was just waiting for the right time to strike
- and maybe try and take over the world again
- this frustrated you and Thor beyond reason
- Thor had been with Loki through it all, had seen the conflict in his mind as he fought with himself over whether or not he had the capability to be good
- and while you certainly hadn’t known Loki as long, you trusted Thor
- and you’d learned enough about Loki in your time as friends to know that
- while he was still mischievous
- he had immense good in him, when he wanted to show it
- it seemed no matter what you and Thor tried to say to the others
- no matter what evidence you gave them
- no matter what stories Thor told them of Loki changing his ways
- they just didn’t seem to want to accept that Loki was capable of being good
- but you and Thor never gave up
- even when Loki, in one of his self-deprecating moods
- would joke that maybe it would be better if he just gave the rest of the team what they wanted and went back to being a villain
- you and Thor always met this with gentle reminders of all the good Loki had done
- even if he didn’t think it was anything special
- you finally make headway with him one night
- on a mission, involving getting civilians out of a dangerous situation
- it’s a bit of a mess, to start out with
- people everywhere, flames and destruction spreading quickly
- the coms are filled with various members of the team yelling orders and giving updates on the areas they’re covering
- you all thought the building was clear
- but as everything starts to come down
- you hear F.R.I.D.A.Y. mention that there’s still a family on one of the upper floors
- no one was able to get to them due to the flames completely surrounding it
- before anyone can plan anything further, you hear Loki’s voice on the com
“I’m on it.”
- the rest of the team goes dead silent
- there are mere seconds before the building is leveled
- and Loki is putting his life in danger to save them
- it surprises neither you nor Thor, as you wait with the rest of the team from a safe area a few hundred yards away
- but the rest of the team has a variety of expressions, ranging from concern to uncertainty to downright skepticism
- as the building flattens out, you can’t help but clutch at Thor’s arm in worry
- Loki’s reckless, but he’s never been willing-to-put-his-life-in-danger-for-someone-else reckless
- at least not with humans
- but the next moment, there’s a flash of green a few feet away
- and Loki, with all four humans, alive and relatively unharmed
- teleports in
- looking rather worse for the wear and clutching his side with one hand
“Stark, call medical attention for them.” “On it…. Good job, Reindeer Games.”
- it’s the nicest thing Tony has ever said to him
- and it doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the team
- and after ensuring the family gets off to an ambulance and checked over for injuries
- the rest of the team goes up to Loki with various positive comments and reassurances that he did good as they get him to the quin jet to get patched up on the way home
- and you can’t help but smile when you see Steve clap him on the back with a smile as he says something to him
- you can’t hear what he says, but it seems to be good, because Loki offers him a somewhat strained, though honest smile and nods once
- later, when he’s sitting on the stretcher after getting the wound on his side doctored and a little of the grime off his face
- you pull yourself up next to him
- as Thor walks to his other side and pats his back gently
- well, gently for Thor
“See, brother. We told you.” “You are good. Better than you have ever given yourself credit for. And now the team knows it, too. You are so much more than the god of mischief.”
- and Loki seems to consider this for a few moments
- and then nods, smiling halfheartedly
“Maybe so.”
