HEY!! I love your profile and I often stalk it rereading your one shots 👀 sorrynotsorry lol I was wondering if you could write #1 “are you even listening to me” but like… the reader is deaf… so it’s super awkward??
Love this idea! xx

You had been in SHIELD for six years, working your way up from field training and onto the tech team. At first your superiors were reluctant, convinced the deafness you’d been born with would hold you back from being a functioning agent. But then they saw that even though you couldn’t hear someone coming, you felt the vibrations in the ground. And how your years of reading lips had given you a special intuition when it came to understanding what people were trying or going to say. Languages came easily to you, giving you an extensive library of foreign languages. When you sat behind a computer your knowledge and intuition came together to make you a phenomenal code-breaker.
And in your sixth year of work you had been able to break a new string of Hydra code.

“Agent,” Agent Hill tapped you on the shoulder, “you’re needed at Avengers headquarters.” As you read her lips your eyes grew large.
“What? Why? How?” you signed.
“The code you broke, it’s essential to the discovery of an infinity stone. You’ve been given top clearance.”
You shook your head up and down quickly, your face alternating between surprise and a wide smile. You fumbled around, grabbing everything you needed and stuffing it in your backpack. You couldn’t believe it, the Avengers! You were about to meet the Avengers! You wondered if Thor smelt different, being a demi-god and all, or if Scarlet witch used her powers to carry her morning coffee around the compound. You also made a mental note not to mention anything about the ‘Civil war,’ it was definitely too soon.

When you arrived at Avenger tower Bruce Banner greeted you.
“Hello Agent Y/L/N!” he signed.
Your face lit up, unaware that he knew sign language.
“I’m very excited to help,” you responded, “I mean- I hope I can help.”
“Oh I’m sure you will!”
Bruce led you through the compound and into a large conference room. You almost dropped your bag when you saw the whole team, sitting in various places around the long glass table.
“Ah! She has arrived!” Thor announced clapping his hand together.
You smiled and gave a small wave to the room before sitting down in the seat Bruce held out for you.
“Great! Agent- Agent-” Tony Stark stood out of his seat and strode around the room towards you. “I’m going to call you Agent Techy-no, with a discovery like the one you made you deserve more than that. Agent Smarty.”
“Tony-” Steve tried to interrupt. “Not now Cap. I’m trying to actually talk about someone other than myself.”
You looked at your computer screen thinking the following conversation didn’t need your attention. You worked on bringing up the code examples onto the screen o the wall so you could get ready to break down the code and what information they could get out of it.
Tony continued on his stroll. “Realizing the code was in Russian, Slovakian, and then backwords German? That is impressive stuff.”
You hadn’t looked up and Tony was starting to get frustrated. Bruce shot a glance at Natasha, trying to see if he should tap you on the shoulder or warn Tony. Natasha just smirked and shook her head.

“Agent Smarty, I’m spouting your praises and not one oh or ah?” Tony said as he walked right up to you. You looked up at him confused, “are you even listening to me?” you read from his lips.
Deadpan you looked Tony in the eyes and signed, “No, I’m deaf.”
Tony didn’t know what you had signed, but knew enough to know he had royally screwed up. His eyes were large and his mouth hung open. For once he was speechless.
“You should really stop skim reading the files Agent Hill gives you.” Natasha muttered as Clint stifled a laugh.
You smiled and signed to Bruce.
“Woah now, language.” Steve warned with a wink.
