Some people may think it odd, but you loved sitting in silence. The silence never seemed to be truly silent because if you listened carefully, you could hear everything that hid in the silence. One of your favorite places to listen to the world around you was your favorite seat at The Gotham Grind.
The biggest problem with sitting quietly alone in the coffee shop was that most people tried to “save” you from the silence, not knowing how much you loved it. You still didn’t understand what signal you were giving off as an invitation, but some guy always seemed to think you were waiting for some meet cute to just happen.
“Pretty thing like you shouldn’t have to sit all alone,” you heard a voice break through the silence. You didn’t even bother to look up at today’s interruption.
“C’mon, don’t be like that. I just want to get to know you,” he tried again, clearly not getting the hint that you wanted to be left alone. “Why don’t we get out of here and I treat you to something nice?”
You were preparing yourself for the scene you just might have to make to get this guy to leave. Clearly he didn’t understand the silent no he was getting. You were growing increasingly more uncomfortable with every moment as he tried to lean in closer and place his hand on your back in an effort to guide you out of your seat and to wherever he wanted to go.
“Hello, Beloved,” Damian said sweetly as he came around to your small table. “I’m sorry I got held up on my way here.”
Damian pulled you in for a hug and whispered, “Just pretend and go with it.”
As he pulled away from you, he turned to the guy who had been trying to pull you away. While you and Damian both knew that this guy would be no match for Damian, you could see all the guy saw was a billionaire’s son.
Trying to maintain his macho persona, the guy broke the silence, saying, “You better be careful, leaving girls like her all alone. They tend to follow the closest shiny offer presented to them. Wouldn’t want you to lose your little trophy girl to a better offer.”
“Y/N makes her own decisions and if you knew anything about her, you’d know that an intelligent conversation is far more important to her than any trinket. I suggest you go before you insult her further while continuing to embarrass yourself,” Damian seethed.
You let out a breath of relief as you watched the guy leave in defeat. You hadn’t realized just how much you had tensed up until you began to settle back down into your seat. Having calmed himself down enough, Damian asked, “Are you okay, Y/N?”
“With a best friend like you around to help save me from creeps, yeah, I’m doing okay,” you answered, a smile finally finding a place on your soft face. You paused before sincerely adding, “Thank you.”
“I’ll always be there when you need me. You were the one that taught me that’s just what best friends do,” he said, waving off any further thanks from you. He looked down at the table before as he was about to take his seat, and offered, “Why don’t I get us something to drink before I sit down? Another tea?”
“Please and thank you,” you beamed at him.
When he got back to the table, you found yourselves in your comfortable routine, cycling between periods of conversation and enjoying the silence together. It was days like today that you didn’t know what you would do if you didn’t have Damian around to watch your back, but you were thankful that you didn’t have to find out any time soon.
