Everyday it was the same.  You seemed to pass all of the same people and the same comments as you walked to and from work.  It probably wasn’t the safest idea, but you always tried to turn your headphones up to avoid having to hear some of the more graphic comments hurled your way.

Your headphone battery had died as you got to work this morning, so now you were stuck hearing every last comment on your walk home.  The walk home started off well enough since you were still in the business district, but within a few blocks you knew there would be more and more nefarious characters to deal with.

By the time you got home, you were barely holding back your tears.  Opening the door, you didn’t even reciprocate Jason’s greeting.  Instead, you rushed to get those headphones charged so you wouldn’t have live through this nightmare again.

“What’s going on?” You heard the concerned voice behind you.  You didn’t want to turn around because as soon as you saw Jason’s worried face, you weren’t going to be able to keep what little composure you had left. When you didn’t answer, Jason tried again softening his voice a bit, “Y/N, what happened?”

“I just had to actually hear it tonight,” you said ominously.  Your voice breaking as you began to cry when you turned around.

With the first crack of your voice, Jason’s arms were around you.  He still wanted to know what you had meant by you had to actually hear it tonight, but he knew you’d explain a bit more once you calmed down.  He gently rubbed your back, reminding you you were safe and loved.

As your breathing evened out a bit, you pulled back and elaborated, “They seemed to know that today I could hear them as I walked by.  I don’t know, my face must’ve given it away.  Anyway, they started yelling more gruesome things and one guy tried to grab at me before I sprinted home.”

You watched as the realization washed over him.  Trying to wrap his head around what you’d said, he asked, “You said ‘today.’ Do they do this everyday?”

The look on your face told him what he needed to know.  You couldn’t put your life on hold because of some idiots, but you did everything you could to block them out.  He shouldn’t be surprised, but he still was.  The fact that this was your daily reality and he was clueless to it made him angry.

He took a moment to collect himself.  He didn’t want to upset you any further by speaking in anger.  When he felt confident that he could speak calmly, he suggested, “How about I walk with you to and from work?  That way we get a little extra quality time together everyday and I can see exactly who Red Hood needs to visit at night to make that commute a little safer for everybody who needs to walk it alone.”

“You already do enough, Jason.  You should be trying to get some rest during the day, not walking me to work like my personal bodyguard,” you countered.

Jason wasn’t about to back down.  He hated that scum like those guys would take advantage of anyone traveling alone, and if they were doing it in his neighborhood, then he clearly wasn’t doing enough to stop it.

“Look at it this way,” Jason reasoned. “If they’re doing this to you, they’re doing it to others too.  If I go with you and figure out who to have a few choice words with, then I’m going to be able to make it better for everybody.  That way, you’ll be making those streets safer for everybody.”

You hated when he played dirty like this.  He was right, plain and simple.  Normally you weren’t able to do much to play hero, but you liked the idea that you might be able to do something to help someone else just by letting your own hero help you. Finally you answered him, “Fine.  If it’ll help others, I’m in.”

“Good, because I would’ve felt like a creep having to follow you instead,” he said with a smirk.  He wanted you to think he was joking, but you both knew better.

“Now c’mon, I made dinner,” he added.  “And I’m taking the night off, so I’m all yours for the rest of the night.”
