So, I was thinking about Jason’s death and I really wanted to write something for it, so…this…happened lol. Hope y’all enjoy it! ♥
There was one day in the whole year that you dreaded more than any other.
April 27th.
It was impossibly hard on Jason, and it cut you to the core to see him hurt like that. Even now, all these years later, you knew that for Jason, it still hurt like it was just yesterday.
Waking up, you didn’t even have to look at the other side of the bed to know that Jason wasn’t there in this morning. He never was.
Yawning, you climbed out of bed and padded to the living room.
You weren’t surprised when you found it, along with the kitchen, empty. Grabbing a jacket, you slipped it on and walked to the window. Prying it open, you climbed out onto the fire escape and, with a sigh, started making your way to the rooftop.
Reaching the top, you paused for a moment, taking in the reds, oranges, and pinks of the sunrise. Your gaze landed on Jason, who was sitting on the edge of the roof, a faint haze of cigarette smoke surrounding him.
Smiling sadly, you went to join him. You silently sat down next to him, leaning your head against his shoulder as he put out his cigarette. Nowadays, Jason only smoked when he was under a lot of pressure or upset.
You sat in silence for several minutes, watching the city come alive with people on their way to work and many who clearly were just heading home from a long night.
As you watched a mother with two small children cross the street, you broke the silence. “Jay?”
He hummed.
“I love you, you know.” You said, lifting your head to look at him.
He smiled softly, staring off into the distance. “I know, Y/N. I love you too.”
You leaned against him again, closing your eyes and relishing in the warmth of the sun’s rays.
It wasn’t until almost an hour later that you went back to the apartment to eat breakfast.
As you put the dishes in the sink, you glanced behind you to see Jason sitting at the counter looking forlorn.
Putting down the rest of the dishes, you walked over and hugged Jason from behind, your face against his back and your arms around his waist.
You felt Jason’s chest rumble as he sighed. Your heart broke for him. Racking your brain, you tried to come up with an idea to distract Jason.
Going out was never an option, not on this day. So if you couldn’t go out…
Your eyes lit up as an idea came to you. Anything you could do outside, you could just as easily do inside!
Kissing Jason’s cheek, you grabbed his hand and dragged him to the couch, pushing him onto a cushion.
“Babe, what are you doing?” Jason asked.
You grinned at him. “Just stay here for a minute, okay? I’ll be right back.” You pecked his cheek then went to the bedroom, shutting the door behind you. Whipping out your phone, you dialed the number of Jason’s favorite restaurant and placed an order to be delivered in a few hours.
Hiding your smile, you walked back to the living room where Jason was looking at you expectantly.
“What was that, Y/N?” He asked.
“Nothing.” You replied, searching the shelves for a movie.
“Why are you being so mysterious?” Jason inquired, suspicion in his voice.
Finding the one you were looking for, you pulled the case off the shelf and turned to Jason, a fake pout on your face.
“I thought you liked it when I’m mysterious.”
He cracked a smile and you grinned. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
Revealing the movie case from behind your back, you showed it to Jason.
“Kung Fu Panda?”
“Yup.” You said, popping the ‘p’. “We’re gonna watch all three of ‘em.”
Putting the DVD in, you snuggled next to Jason and hit ‘play’ on the remote.
After finishing the three Kung Fu Panda movies, you started watching Lilo and Stitch.
Halfway through, the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it.” You told Jason, getting up.
Grabbing your wallet, you answered the door and paid the delivery boy. Walking back to the living room, you grinned as Jason’s jaw dropped when he saw you holding the take-out boxes.
“Babe,” He said quietly. “I love you.”
Setting the food out on the coffee table, you laughed. “I should think so.”
Jason kissed you before digging in and unpausing the move.
_____
You and Jason spent the rest of the day curled up on the couch watching movies. There was enough leftover food for dinner, so you didn’t have to worry about cooking.
Around 10 o’clock, you went to bed, exhausted from the day. Kissing Jason goodnight, you quickly fell asleep.
It felt like only minutes later that you were awoken by Jason’s tossing and turning.
Grabbing his shoulder, you gently shook him. “Jay. Jason, wake up.”
He continued to toss, mumbling incoherently about ‘Joker’, ‘Bruce’, and ‘too late’.
Biting your lip, you shook Jason harder. “Jason, you have to wake up. You’re dreaming, it’s only a nightmare. Wake up!” You practically shouted the last two words.
His eyes flew open and he sat up, clearly startled, a sheen of sweat covering his face and upper body. Breathing heavily, he choked out a dry sob.
You swore you just felt your heart break. “Jason,” You whispered, rubbing his shoulder comfortingly. “You’re okay, you’re safe, you’re alive.”
“Y-Y/N,” He stuttered. “Jo-Joker, he…he had you-you too. He-he killed you.”
“Oh, Jason.” You breathed. “I’m alright. I’m safe, I’m right here.” Pulling him to your chest, you ran your hands through his hair, whispering reassuring things as Jason’s tears soaked your shirt.
You stayed like that until the sun peeked through the window.
It was a new day. A day that a younger Jason had never gotten to see, and one that you were determined for him to see for a long while, because you would do anything to protect your Jaybird.
