He watched the ship dock and he thought about her for the first time in years. He wondered where she might be, if she was out there somewhere.
He wasn’t sure how how it was since he’d seen her the last time. Time didn’t really exists out here. But he remembered it vividly. She’d dived deep, so beautiful. Ethereal. He wanted to move closer, see her up close. But he was sure he’d frighten her.
She’d been out there several time. Exploring the small cove. He wondered what had drawn her to that spot. His spot. Why did she keep coming back? Would she come again? He hoped she would.
He knew nothing about her. Nothing much about humans in general. He simply didn’t find them that interesting. Except for one. The beautiful woman. There was something there, something enchanting. Something different.
He swam out to the rocks and climbed up, watching the sun come up. His heart ached a bit, missing someone that he didn’t even know. He pictured her face in the back of his mind and looked out on the little city in the distance. He was sure that’s where she was from.
He needed her there, with him. To mend his wounded heart.
More time passed, slowly, yet it passed. His heart ached less and less for her. He swam the ocean, discovering new places. But he longed for home. So he returned. His little corner looked the same, swimming slowly to his cove. He heard the splashing before he reached it and he froze.
Could it be?
He moved closer, quietly. Under the water, there she was. No others could ever compare. There were none more beautiful and his heart raced, hiding quickly. She couldn’t see him. She’d be afraid, she’d run. So he stayed back.
She emerged from the water and looked around. She knew someone was there. “Come on out,” she spoke softly and his heart raced faster. What would she think. He peeked his head out, his blue eyes locking onto hers and she smiled. “It’s okay,” she said again and swam closer until they were face to face.
His hand reached up and caressed her cheek. She let her eyes flutter shut and he released a ragged breath. He couldn’t believe it was happening, that she was here. She was special to him, different. An anomaly.
She opened her eyes once more and kissed his lips gently. He couldn’t help but moan, his arms wrapping around her as they moved in the water. She was his, she’d come back just for him. He’d knew he’d give this up if she wanted him to.
She’d saved him from his distress, put him back together. He kissed her, and held out a hand. They swam back to the beach and he gave her a look. Would she want him to join her? As if she read his mind, she gave him a subtle nod.
He took a breath, knowing everything would change if he stepped into land. But it was a risk he’d be willing to take. He closed his eyes and moved, smiling a bit as his toes touched the sand.
Once a year, they returned to the little cove. They’d swim out together, kissing once they reached the coolness of the cave. Oh how he loved her, his lover, his soulmate. His anomaly.
