A Soulmate Universe where you have a compass on your arm, that constantly points you in the direction of your soulmate.
Your friends were weirdos, that’s part of the reason you loved them, but you had to draw the line at midnight scavenger hunts around Gotham. It’s like they wanted to get killed. Actually, the reason they wanted to do it at night was so none of your parents knew they were teens trying to find their soulmate, and because a bunch of your friends wanted their soulmate to be a superhero.
Still, even if you weren’t so bothered by tracking down your ‘meant to be’, you were dressed and walking around Gotham staring at the clock on your forearm. The group of about eight had split into four pairs, taking turns on who’s compass to follow. You were with one of your guy friends, who was desperately hoping his soulmate was Batgirl, and currently following your compass – which didn’t seem like it actually knew where it was supposed to be leading you.
You had walked in a circle about five times by this point, trecking around central Gotham, and stopping for coffee three times. You wanted to give up, but your friend – Ben – refused to let you. He thought the constant change meant your soulmate must be close by and looking for you too. It was a common thing among teenagers, looking for your soulmate in a big group like it was a scavenger hunt.
“Have you noticed that it’s stabilised?” Ben tapped the compass, waiting for it to tell you both to double back.
The compass was pointing into an apartment building. Maybe your soulmate had been out looking for you and just headed home after giving up. Now that you were at an actual real-life location, you didn’t want to go inside. A soulmate was a big thing and finding one changed your life a lot. What if you didn’t like him? What if he didn’t like you? You hadn’t even wanted to go looking for him in the first place but now you were going to meet him!
You turned around but the compass stayed pointing at the building. Ben grabbed your shoulders tightly and walked you to the door.
“He’s going to love you,” Ben assured you, watching as the compass needle moved slightly, no longer pointing to the door, but to the side. You didn’t have anything to worry about, after all, this wasn’t his apartment building. You were freaking out over nothing. Then the needle led you to the fire escape. “Climbing a high scary building on a fire escape, just how I wanted this night to go.”
“I don’t mind.” you shrugged, you’d always been quite outdoorsy and active. You were only allowed out tonight because you’d climbed down your buildings fire escape.
The needle kept directing you higher up the building, till you were pulling yourself onto the roof, with BEn shaking behind you. You didn’t think fire escape’s led all the way to the roof of a building, but somehow this one did. Like fate had made it special as a sign to you.
The rooftop was empty.
The needle was pointing forward, so you took a step forward. Still forward. The compass had to be playing a joke on you.
“Oh my god, you lucky piece of…” Ben was shaking his head as he spoke quietly. She looked at him and he was pointing and a teen, asleep next to the roof railing. Red Robin was asleep on the roof, and there was no one else who the compass could possibly be leading you too.
You really thought this had to be a joke. There was a small chance you might have been okay with your soulmate being Red Robin if you met him as a civilian first, and then fallen in love, and then found out, but straight out hero identity. What if he made some stupid decision and decided you couldn’t know his real name yet? Then what would you do when people started asking questions? How would you cope knowing he was saving the city every night.
“Do it.” Ben encouraged as you got closer to the sleeping boy. Your compass had gone crazy now, spinning in a constant circle to let you know that yes, this one was the one.
“Do what?”
“Take the mask off.”
“What?” you yelled then covered your mouth. You didn’t want to wake him up, or alert and bad guys to his location.
“It’s your soulmate, you have a right to know…” Ben shrugged.
You thought about that. Ben was right in a way. You did have a right to know, and it wasn’t like you were hurting him by taking it off for a quick look. Your feet shuffled closer, your hand raised and touched his face. Shivers ran up your arm and every hair on your body stood up. You looked carefully at the face you were touching. Even with the mask on, he seemed so at peace and happy. He was sleeping, and taking advantage of the situation didn’t seem fair. IT was his identity to share when he pleased. He was sleeping, and a superhero, and probably in desperate need of a hug. And, from what you could see, he was pretty cute.
You let go and stepped away. “Let’s go find your soulmate.”
“What? No! At least wake him up.” Ben protested, but you put a hand on his shoulder and walked away.
“He wasn’t looking for me, I can know, but saving the world is probably stressful enough without having to factor in a soulmate.” You sighed, looking back at how beautiful the sleeping bird was. “Let’s find yours now.”
“Okay.” Ben begrudgingly agreed.
“And can we keep mine a secret for us to know?”
“Why?” Ben wasn’t always the smartest tool in the box.
“It’s safer, if some of those villains found out Red Robin had a soulmate, they’d probably kill me. It’s not that I don’t trust our other friends, I just don’t want it getting out of control.”
“Smart and morally correct.” the voice of Red Robin made you jump. “Nice to meet you, soulmate.” he smiled and rubbed his eyes, trying to suppress a yawn. It later turned out that Sleeping Beauty had woken up the second you’d touched his face.
