Love is Blind

Note: Apparently this is the only Scott fic I wrote?? Please request some? I love him??

Scott, from the moment he got it, hated his mutation. He hated the danger it put others in, he hated the lack of control he had over it, even after months of practice, but most of all, he hated that he couldn’t see his eyes.

Everyone else at the mansion had a pretty good chance of finding their soulmates. Mutants, more often than not, ended up with mutants. But no matter how bad he wanted to find his soulmate, he knew he couldn’t. Not without endangering everyone around.

Honestly, he just wanted to be able to see the world as it was, without the red hues that his glasses provided. Even if it was just for a little while.

You hated your powers for a completely different reason. Your mutation wasn’t so much a mutation as it was a lack of one. You had the ability to block the powers of others. It was helpful sometimes. Not as helpful as, say, being able to shoot lasers from your eyes or being able to teleport or being able to read minds and move things without touching them, but it was useful, you supposed, for defensive tactics.

The others called you Shield.

Now that you had been working with Charles and the other X-Men, you supposed your powers weren’t so bad. Months of work had shown that if you focused hard enough, you were able to create force-fields and other defensive measures to protect yourselves and the others in battle. Jean couldn’t get inside your head, and none of the others’ powers could affect you either.

Scott had liked you since the moment you arrived at the mansion. He took one look at you through the red lenses in front of his eyes and he knew that you weren’t just another student or another teammate. You were something more than that. He didn’t know, however, the extent to which the two of you were connected.

When he learned about your powers and what you could do, it only gave him more hope.

After training one day, Scott approached you.

“Hey there, Shield.”

“What’s up, Cyclops?” You teased.

He smirked. “You know I hate that name.”

“And you know I hate mine, so I guess we’re about even.”

“Fair enough.” He chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “So I was wondering maybe…I want to go to the mall, and I kind of don’t want to wear my glasses- that didn’t come out right. What I’m trying to ask is-”

“You want me to block your powers for a few hours so you can go to the mall like a normal teenager.”

“Yes. That’s exactly what I was trying to say.”

“I can do it, but I’d have to go with you.” You told him. It didn’t seem to bother him. The opposite, in fact.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

“All right, let me get changed out of this battle suit and then I’ll meet you in the main room?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

The drive to the mall was nice. The two of you had ‘borrowed’ one of the professor’s cars and were jamming out to the radio all the way there. It had been a while since either of you had found time to relax and just be teenagers. Being X-Men was important, but it didn’t exactly leave you a lot of free time.

You parked the car and the two of you stood in the parking lot.

“We should probably do it out here in case anything goes wrong.” You told him.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Scott nodded. He looked up at the sky, closed his eyes, and then took off his glasses, tucking them away in his pocket. You took both of his hands in your own and took a deep breath. Your power flowed into Scott, and he gasped as he felt the change. It was small, but it was there. “Can I-?”

“You can open your eyes, Scott.”

For the first time in months, when he opened his eyes, lasers didn’t erupt from his eye sockets. And in addition to that, the sky wasn’t purple. It was blue. He stared up at the cloudless blue for a few seconds longer. He had almost forgotten what it looked like.

Then, slowly, Scott brought his line of vision down…to you. He was scared of hurting you, but you squeezed his hands reassuringly. Nothing would happen so long as you were touching him.

Finally, your eyes met his. For the first time, you gazed into his mismatched eyes and your heart stopped. His left eye matched your right eye. And your left eye matched his right eye. The two of you stood there frozen, staring at the other’s eyes until they faded to matching.

“S-Scott.” You struggled to get your mouth to cooperate. “You’re…”

“I knew it.” His voice was quiet, disbelieving of what had just happened. “I knew it!”

“Oh my God,” you rushed into his arms. Scott held you tight, spinning you around like you were a princess in some fairytale and the two of you had just stumbled upon a happily ever after. Scott had been your soulmate all along.

The two of you stood there holding each other for a moment. Scott never wanted to let go of you. Somehow, holding you in his arms was the most satisfying feeling on the planet, and he felt like he would never get enough of it.

You pulled away to look at him for a few seconds, eyes scanning over his unobscured face. You brushed his cheek with your thumb, staring at his soft lips. He smiled and pulled you in, closing the space between you.

“Thank you,” He whispered as he rested his forehead against yours. “For everything.”

“How about we go into the mall, soulmate?” You laughed through tears of joy. He nodded, pressing a quick kiss to your lips and then wrapping an arm around your shoulders as the two of you walked into the building
