You shifted uncomfortably as you tried to avoid Steve’s gaze.
“We’ve all missed you,” Steve was the one to break the silence, his voice guarded and careful.
“I’ve missed you all too,” you answered, allowing yourself a small smile.
There was silence for a long moment before Steve ventured, “Are you going to tell me why you left?”
You drew a slow breath, holding out your hand. Concentrating, you summoned a small flame, cradling the fire in your palm. Steve watched with wide eyes as the flames danced through your fingers before winking out of existence.
You released a breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding, trying to gauge the super-soldier’s reaction to your power. “New York isn’t exactly big on mutants.” You explained quietly, warmth lingering on your palms. “I mean, it’s getting better because people are learning to accept guys like you and Tony. Super-soldiers and superheroes aren’t bad, but mutants are still, well, scary. I figured it’d be best if I laid low while I figured everything out. The people here are like me. It’s safe, you know?”
Steve was silent for a long moment, “You like it better here.” It was a statement, not a question.
You pressed your lips together, not wanting to lie to him. “Yeah.”
“You’re with Wagner now?”
You nodded. “It’s better this way.”
“Are you sure?”
