This wasn’t her first foster home but she prayed it was her last. She had only been staying with the Harmons for two weeks but she got on well with their daughter, Violet, and the parents were good to her. Ben and Vivian seemed like caring enough people. They seemed to be genuinely concerned about her transition into their home and a new school.
Earlier that day, she and Violet had gone to some hole-in-the-wall record store and Y/N had bought more than she meant too. Older and newer stuff, she didn’t have a preference. Nirvana, The Vaccines, Blink-182, Arctic Monkeys. That’s what she was doing when he first walked in: going through her new music.
“Kurt Cobain?” A voice behind her said.
Y/N turned from where she had been searching in her closet for a storage bin, “Uhm..yeah. Who are you?”
“Tate,” he smiled, thumbing through her music, “Are you Violet’s sister? I didn’t see you when they first moved in.”
She shook her head, “The Harmons are my new foster parents. I’m Y/N,”
He nodded his head as he continued to slowly take in the room, “Where are your parents?”
“They’re-…I’m sorry. Are you a friend of Violet’s or something? Who are you?”
He nodded, “I live nearby so sometimes I just-” he spotted a piece of cardboard sticking out from under her bed, “You shouldn’t mess with that, ya know?”
She followed his eyes to see what he was going on about. It was her ouija board. She had gotten it awhile back at a flea market but never worked up the courage to use it.
“Are you scared of that stuff? Ghosts and what not?”
He shook his head and his blonde hair swayed, “No but you should be”
Y/N frowned, “I’ve never used it before,” she kicked it further under her bed, “You’ve got a lot of opinions for someone who I’ve only just met,” she chuckled.
“I’m sorry it’s just…you’re nice. I wouldn’t want anything happening,” he came to stand directly in front of her.
She looked up at him and took in the beauty of his face. She resisted the urge to push a piece of hair that fell in front of his eyes, “I’ll be careful, I promise,”
Tate smiled widely. How beautiful he looked when he smiled, she thought. “That’s all I ask. Maybe I’ll see you around?” He asked as he began to back up towards the door.
Y/N nodded, “You know where I live,” she joked.
“Yup” he smirked. As he walked out the door, he turned back, peeking his head back in the room, “Weird question but…what are you doing on Halloween?”
“Probably nothing. I haven’t really talked about it with anyone. I’m not sure what kind of house this is. Festive or-”
“Do you wanna do something?” He asked plainly.
She paused, “Do something?”
“Go somewhere. A movie or something. I don’t know,” he looked down at his converse.
She liked the way he looked at her and how nervous he seemed when he spoke. That’s why she accepted that first invitation.
“Okay,” she smiled.
Tate looked around the room once more before meeting her eyes, “Okay,” he smiled back before disappearing around the corner.
