Hybrid light-angst featuring kitty!Hanzo and kitty!Genji. Enjoy

You settle to eat at a cafe. It’s a little overcast outside, but you choose to eat outside since you rather liked the weather. Besides, the tables all had umbrellas in case it started to rain. You didn’t get anything too spectacular. Just a classic sandwich to get by.

You turn away from your plate just for a moment. You wanted to grab your phone so you could watch something while you eat. Suddenly, you hear the loud clanking of your plate and look to see your food was gone. In the corner of your eye, you see a man, a hybrid man, running from the scene.

You immediately give chase, yelling at the thief to stop, but he only runs faster. It’s rather difficult for you to keep up.

You see the hybrid duck into an alleyway, but when you follow, you can’t see him. It’s dark and there are dozens of garbage cans littered around the area. It was awfully quiet as well, so you tread cautiously in case anything tries to jump you.

You notice movement behind a dumpster. Carefully, you creep up to the scene and see the hybrid man who had stolen your food. He picks up on your presence and looks over his shoulder to hiss at you— typical of a feline hybrid. Still, he does not attack. He looks almost fearful, actually. Now that you have a closer look, you see just how thin he really looked. Eyes sunken in, dressed in rags, he was a real mess. That wasn’t the end of it, though. You follow the hybrid’s extended arm and see he was holding the food out to another feline hybrid who appeared to be in an even worse condition. He was extremely malnourished, was covered in old and new wounds, even had a missing arm and a leg that appeared to be old injuries given the stumps were scarred over. Despite the food being held out for him, the weak hybrid did not eat. He just… stared out into space. You noticed his chest moving a bit as he breathed, so it was a relief to see he wasn’t already dead. It was also hard to tell given how poor of a state they were in, but you did notice that the two looked similar. You figure they must be related in some way,, and that would explain the stronger hybrid’s desire to put the other’s hunger over his own.

Well, now you felt like kind of an asshole getting angry over a stupid sandwich. The hybrid did what he had to, you think. The weaker one appeared to be near death, so his companion was doing whatever he could to save him. Now, you wanted to help as well.

You lower your guard and try to make yourself as least threatening as possible. You tell the hybrid you’d like to help and take his weak companion to get some much needed medical care, but the hybrid was still extremely wary. You mention he can come along and stand guard, and you promise he can take his friend (sibling?) if he doesn’t feel safe.

You get the weak hybrid, whose name you learned to be Genji, to a nearby medical facility for immediate treatment. The other one, called Hanzo, is left with you so Genji could have a proper evaluation. Only when all the tests have been completed and treatment has been applied are you and Hanzo allowed to step in and stay with Genji.

He was mostly unconscious for everything, so after being given fluids from an IV drip and proper warmth, he starts to come to and is a bit jarred by the change in environment. Hanzo, on the other hand, is all too happy to see his brother (yes you confirmed they are brothers) beginning to respond again. Genji was given a bit of food to nibble on and as he converses with his brother, the nurse approaches you to make a point of how close a call this was. A few hours too late and Genji would have been dead from undernourishment and dehydration. He’d still need to be watched carefully for a few days, but you really did play a hand in saving him.

The issue now is finding the two of them a home. Genji was clearly too injured to live on his own, and letting them back out into the streets could lead to this happening again. The nurses were aware of how Hanzo treated you before, so he may not be completely socialized, which would be a problem in finding adopters.

————————-

You’d come to visit the two hybrids day after day. Genji was doing far better each time you saw him, and even Hanzo was starting to gain weight from the hearty meals he was given. You were the only one the hybrids really relaxed around, besides around each other that is. The two always thanked you for your kindness, and Hanzo apologized for his thievery. He promised to pay you back some day. The two brothers were really starting to grow on you, so without telling them, you signed the adoption papers. You continued visiting them as Genji recovered until the day of their discharge came.

The two felines were at a loss for what was to come. They weren’t sure about being handed over to strangers, but after being so well taken care of, the streets didn’t sound very pleasant either. Then, you pulled up in your car.

You took the weary brothers in your arms and told them the good news. They were going home with you, and you were going to do everything in your power to give them a better life, starting with getting some prosthetics for Genji.

The hybrids couldn’t be any happier and eagerly hopped into your car to see their new home.

And to think this all happened because you decided to eat out one day. Fancy that.
