Prompt: Going off of the idea that Genji doesn’t like the sound of his own voice.

Genji Shimada was a real mystery. You have been
working with him for a decent amount of time now, yet he still glares at you
with a gaze sharp as daggers. The very aura he gives off sends shivers down
your spine in pure intimidation. Even worse, he barely utters any words around
you. You would hear him utter a few scarce words to his teammates, but he has
never once directly spoken a word toward you. You suppose that just came with
being a member of Blackwarch, but he was near impossible to read and the lack
of communication made getting close and completing missions very difficult. And
yet, the mystery surrounding him made Genji all the more alluring. You wanted
to get to know him, to grow close and actually get friendly with the solitary
ninja. You feared he didn’t like you, but you wanted to change that. Perhaps
ease the tension a little. So, during your down time between missions, you made
every attempt you could to befriend Genji.Your first attempt was trying to sit with him for lunch.
It would be an easy, casual way to start up a conversation. It was then you
came to realize Genji never really ate in the cafeteria with everyone else. You
spent a good chunk of your lunch time trying to find him, only to find he’s
been sitting on the roof with only 5 minutes left to your break. And, as luck
would have it, Genji decided his lunch was up and chose to leave as you were
planning how to get up there. You wound up having to eat your lunch while
working and that wasn’t the most pleasant thing to do.Your next method of attack was to team up with Genji
during training. Not the best in terms of being social, but it’s a good way to
strengthen your bond on the battlefield! However, Genji turned out to be quite
a handful to say the least. He still didn’t talk to you and he absolutely
slaughtered you. He kicked your ass so hard you’re going to feel it for weeks.
You leave the training area feeling incredibly sore and Genji didn’t so much as
give you a glance before up and leaving. You stared at his back as he walked
away with a look of longing in your eyes. You wanted to make this work, you
really did, but perhaps Genji didn’t.
Maybe he was just dead set on being that silent loner. Perhaps this
relationship you were striving for just wasn’t meant to be.Then, a few days later,
you were called on an urgent mission. There was a major attack on a city by
Talon. The battle was expected to be gruesome, but you were ready… until you
saw Genji sitting in the very same transport ship you were boarding. Your heart
sunk as he shot you his usual glare, but the only available seat was right next
to him. You just hoped he could tolerate your presence for the duration of the
flight.
You were well into the battle when all of a sudden you
were struck with an intense, burning pain. Your knees buckled, your hands moved
to grip the aching area, and suddenly you hit the ground. The sound of gun
shots and crashing began to fade to a frightening silence. Your vision goes
black. You aren’t sure how much time as passed, but you
slowly open your eyes to find the scene from before till stayed strong. There
was rubble everywhere and the sound of gunshots didn’t let up. The searing pain
is back, but when you reach to apply pressure to the area you find a hand is
already there. Only then do you realize Genji is right beside you. As a matter
of fact, it seems he has moved you too. He had the two of you hidden behind an
overturned car and he had you sitting up, resting against its side so you’d be
at least a little more comfortable. You bite your lip and wince at the pain as you grab
Genji’s hand and move it from your wound so you can inspect it. Looks like
you’ve been shot and you’re bleeding quite a lot. You press your hands on it to
lessen the blood flow, trying your hardest not to show any weakness in front of
Genji, considering he already thinks so lowly of you.“You will be alright,” Genji says. “I called Angela.
She is coming. You will be taken to safety and treated shortly.”Your eyes light up at the sound of his voice. It was
so… gentle. So soft in contrast to his hard and harp exterior. Even the gentle
tremor of cybernetics on his vocal chords was like music to your ears. You’ve
heard him speak before, granted, but only out of eavesdropping. Now, you get to
hear his voice loud and clear and it was so
worth the wait.“You just spoke to me,” you mutter, looking completely
dumbfounded.“…Yes,” he replies. “What, did you think I was mute?”
“No! Not… exactly.
You just— barely ever talk at all.
And this is the first time you’ve ever spoken to me! I was starting to think that, well, maybe you just didn’t like
me.”You could hear Genji sputter a bit in shock underneath
his mask.“What? I do not dislike you at all,” he says with
earnest.“Then why don’t you ever talk to me?”
Genji goes silent. He turns his gaze away from you in
what appears to be embarrassment.“…..voice….” he whispers.
“What?”
“It’s—my voice. The way it sounds. I hate it. I try to
avoid it as much as I can,” Genji says with a sigh.“Oh,” is all you can really say in response. “But… the
way you glare at me—““That’s just my face.”
“And you eating alone at lunch—“
“I do not want people to see my face.”
“And the training?”
“I never go easy on anybody. Didn’t the others tell
you?”You take a moment to think it all over, then let out a
weak giggle, stopping only because it hurts too much.“So that’s really it then? You just don’t like the
sound of your voice?”Genji nods.
“Well, I like it,” you comment. “Been trying so hard
to hear it lately and it sounds wonderful. Such a shame for you to hide such a
wonderful thing.”You let out a grunt as another wave of pain hits you.
You aren’t sure if you can stay conscious before Mercy arrives. Genji notices
this and takes hold of one of your hands.“I’ve got you,” he says softly. That was enough to
keep you going.“So… you don’t dislike me,” you start. “But do you…
like me?” Okay, maybe now the shock was making you a little too bold. You can hear the smile in Genji’s voice as he
responds. “Yes,” he says. “I like you very much. I just feared you wouldn’t
like me all too much. I stay distant with just about everyone I meet just to be
safe.”The grip you have on Genji’s hand weakens. You can
feel the world spinning.“I like you, I like you,” you chant in your dizzy
state. “You just need to talk to me more, alright? I don’t think I can live
without hearing that voice from now on.”Genji shakes his head in whimsical disbelief.
“I will have to work my way up to speaking more. But I
can try, for you.”And with that, you were
out.
You eventually come to in a white room, nestled nicely
in a warm, soft bed. You must be in a med bay, safely away from the hectic
battlefield. Yet, your first thought was whether or not Genji made it out okay.
You slowly rise so you’re sitting up in the bed,
groaning softly at the discomfort as you were still experiencing a bit of pain.
Then, you feel a gentle touch on your hand and turn to see Genji sitting beside
your bed. You could tell by the look in his eyes that he was smiling.“Hello,” he coos softly, tightening his grip on your
hand. God, his voice was like butter. You wanted to wrap yourself up in it.“Hello,” you say in reply.
“I am glad you are alright. I tried speaking to you
while you were asleep. Thought it might wake you up faster…”Oh! Well, he certainly seems to be living up to his
promise to talk to you more. How sweet. You carefully inch closer to the edge
of the bed so you could be closer to Genji.“Hm, maybe that’s why I rested so well,” you say.
“Thank you.”“You’re welcome,”
Genji replies, just soft enough so only you could hear him. His voice acting
like a well-kept secret between the two of you. You absolutely loved it.
