Heaving the last of your suitcases into the car, you made one final trip into the apartment, double checking that everything was in order and safe from any damage that might happen while no one was occupying it, and picked up the carefully wrapped present for Kojirou’s mother.

Every year he made several trips to Japan, not only for the sake of teaching at Totsuki but also to visit his mother every time he had an opportunity to. The first time you had met her, you’ve had, technically, already been with him for 4 years and if you thought getting him to go on a date with you and not constantly drown in his self-inflicted pressure, making him see you worthy of meeting his mother was that much worse.

You had no idea what made you worthy in the end but one time, Kojirou came to you, talking about his upcoming visit and, out of the blue, as if it was the most natural thing, asked you if you wanted to tag along and meet his mother. At that moment, it had shocked you so much, the plate with food almost slipped from your grip, only stopping it in the last second and stuttering out a reply.

To say that you were nervous and anxious to the limitation of your being would be one big understatement and even though it went without a hitch, you were always a little on edge meeting her, knowing just how much she meant to him.

However, this year it seemed he had truly wanted to torment you. A couple of weeks ago, Kojirou had asked you if you wanted to get a present for her, reasoning that because of your working hours, you were more likely to find something in the stores than him.

Again, you had been shocked beyond belief and the next weeks had been spent stressing over the perfect present for her. Nothing had seemed good enough but you had been able to settle on something that had a unique charm to it, something you had a feeling she would appreciate.

Locking the door behind you, you opened the passenger door, placing the present on the seat and climbed onto the driver’s seat, starting the car.

The drive towards Shino’s was a short one. Kojirou, ever the hard working man, had chosen an apartment close to his restaurant, so he was always close by in case of an emergency.

Arriving, you honked three times, grinning cheekily as an exasperated-looking Kojirou came out, dressed in casual attire.

“What did I tell you about being noisy around here?”

“Aww, come on. I just couldn’t resist. Are you ready?”

He nodded, then smirked at you and raised an eyebrow. “Are you?”

Try as you might, you weren’t able to hide the effect his mother had on you from him. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” you shrugged, patting the ribbon of the present and smiling softly. “Just hope she’ll like it.”

“Well, if we don’t get going now, we’ll never know,” he replied, opening the driver’s door.

You scooted over onto the passenger’s seat, fastening the belt.

“Take me away then, Shinomiya-san,” you grinned, ignoring how he rolled his eyes.

Fastening his own belt, he checked the pocket of his pants for the small ring-sized bulge. For so long, his mother had pestered him about going the next step with you, warning him about being too late but he was finally certain.

You’d endured so many things because of him, and with this ring, he would pay you back for it tenfold.
