The world was a bleak haze from the comfort of your bed. The weather report on your phone said that it was the first snow day of the winter season. But, fall left you with a parting gift—a terrible cold.
Swaddled in a multitude of blankets, you could barely enjoy the morning sunlight coming from your dusty blinds with the mucus buildup in your throat and nose. And it certainly didn’t feel better when you had to sneeze. On the bright side, the thought of staying in your house warm dorm was comforting. If it wasn’t the first snowfall of the season.
It was truly the best at the worst of times.
Wiping the snot from your nose for the eighth time that day, you sat up and reached for your phone on the nightstand. The bright digital numbers read 3:17.
Todoroki should be heading out of UA right now. Your bi-colored haired best friend and boyfriend should’ve got your 15 messages you spammed during the day. He never let you down when it came to you doing your homework, begrudgingly.
He was always by your side since elementary. Lunches in the comfort of just each other, the passing crumbled notes or doodles of the teacher, make-believe that you were both pro-heroes in the school courtyard. One could say that you two were best friends, which was entirely the truth.
You were the first one outside his family to know about his scar and situation with his mother. You told him that you put yourself first in line to deck his dad in the nose. The violent statement slowly opened his heart to you. It was same vice versa. Certainly there were a few times where words couldn’t form in your mouth, dry in the face of bullies, taunting you for your quirk, and he would step in. You knew from his powerful glare directed to your enemies that things between you two would go swimmingly.
Also his resilient and quiet nature meshed well with your extroverted and optimistic persona. It was definitely questionable, especially in the minds of his long line of admirers at UA. You could yak his whole ear off if you were paid to. And then you would split it with Todoroki to get some cold soba afterwards.
Hmm, maybe another nap can keep me busy until he comes, your tired mind pondered.
But before your crusted eyelids shut, your ears heard a firm knock.
“What’s the password?” You croaked, knowlingly smiling on who it might be.
“(Name), it’s Shouto.”
“Invalid attempt. Try again.”
You could practically see his tired fingers rubbing his temples.
“All Might to Protron, do you copy?” He voiced your made up superhero names from childhood through the wooden door.
You giggled.
“Roger. You may come in!”
Your two-toned haired friend entered your room, dressed in his school uniform with a plastic bag hanging from his hand.
“I hope you know it’s dangerous to leave your door open like this.” He closed the door behind him with a click.
You waved the danger off.
“I had to use the bathroom and didn’t have the energy to lock it. My sickness is slowly consuming me.”
“Doesn’t mean you can’t do this simple thing.”
“Okay, Maybe you should leave the door open, the girls and boys here could see this lovely side of you.” You mockingly sighed, but coughing up a storm at the end of your sentence.
“Then it looks like you don’t need the notes and medicine after all.”
His body was already moving towards the door.
“I’m sorry! I was rude. Please don’t leave me like this.” You put on your biggest pair of puppy eyes.
He looked at your pathetic form and shook his head smiling, going back to sit down on your bedside to rummage through his backpack.
Despite your annoying sinuses, a light shined through in eyes on seeing your saving grace in the form of neat handwriting and Advil.
“You’re honestly the best Shouto.” You took his papers, giving his written words a once over.
“Mm.” Todoroki unscrewed the turquoise cap as you examined his work, popping out two pills.
“Here.” His cold hand placed the two tablets gently into your palm.
You swallowed them while your boyfriend offered his half full water bottle to you. Taking it quickly, you gulped the lukewarm water down your clogged throat.
He watched your neck bobbed up and down your barely visible Adam’s apple. How you kept your skin so soft, considering how hard you worked in school to your current condition, was a mystery to him. Swanlike, almost.
You were beautiful, without a doubt, but that fact never occurred to him when he first meet you. A dwarf in pigtails, he remembered, that barely knew how to tie her shoes.
From when he instinctively defended you in front of those elementary bullies to when you cheered from the stands when his left side erupted in flames. He couldn’t recall a time where you weren’t special to him.
Your friendly personality and quirky humor grew on him like a fungus over the years. His affections for you certainly didn’t decrease when you openly supported his dreams to become separate from his family lineage. All free time was spent either texting, calling, or mindlessly being in the presence of each other.
Inside jokes, funny nicknames, wild adventures; all done by your discretion. No matter how many times he would roll his eyes or lecture you, it felt more like home than at his own house.
Todoroki would have to silently thank whatever higher being controlling his fate made you do the first move to ask out his oblivious ass.
You sighed happily, wiping the stray droplets from your bottom lip. “Thank you. You’re going through all this trouble for me.”
“It wasn’t an issue. Aizawa-sensei said you have to make up classwork after school tomorrow.”
A groan escaped your throat, where you threw yourself on your messy bed.
“I guess I haven’t suffered enough yet,” You sighed. “Can you at least stay with me until I’m done? My misery needs some company.”
“Of course.”
His reassuring tone seemed to trigger a switch in you.
“You’re the best. I swear sometimes we should just get married already.”
“Married?”
Three seconds it took you to realize what you said.
Your face spiked up to another thousands of degrees. You and your big mouth.
“Did I really say married? Nah, I didn’t really mean it like that, I just-“
“Then what did you mean?” He asked neutrally, despite your frantic antics.
“I mean, you’re always giving me good advice, you always listen to my weird jokes, you would defend my honor even if it meant damaging yours. I can’t remember a time that you weren’t there for me. You also seem to know exactly what I need when I don’t know it myself. It just feels like you’re meant to be here with me.”
He slowly nodded in understanding ,but you still continued, this time with animated hands.
“Also you make my heart beat really fast when you smile only at me. When I need validation in the room, I always look for you. It’s always more than enough. I just-”
You sighed dreamily.
“-feel so lucky that you wanted to be with me and are just so…amazing. So, I guess the idea of marrying you just popped into my mind.”
Awaiting his reaction made your boxed room get smaller by the second. How badly you wanted to rake up all the words you said and stuff back in your mouth again. Though, all you said was true. Regrets shouldn’t be felt. It came from the unfiltered, sincere core of your heart. Your boyfriend deserved to know what you were thinking. You looked at him.
Todoroki’s face was beet red. He was as stiff as a board.
“Shouto, are you okay?” Slightly panicking, you placed your hand on his lap, hoping for a response.
Your worrying made him slowly come back to earth, in the form of him slowly grasping your hand on his lap.
Todoroki looked downward, nestling his chin into his chest.
Even with the close proximity, you couldn’t pinpoint what his expression, but his hand was slowly growing clammy.
“…you.” He muttered, his cheeks blazing to the point that his quirk might have activated at that point.
“What?” You coarsely asked.
“I love you, (Name). “ He clarified, trying desperately to repress his growing blush. “But let’s not get married right away. At least until we get settled down first.”
The room’s atmosphere spun and expanded, the statement hitting you like a freight train.
This was the first time he had ever spoken those three words. You would be lying if you hadn’t imagined this moment a couple of hundreds of times. Mentally prepared, you were not.
You only did the most instinctive thing in your caliber. Your hands hid your already matching red face, a wave of elation coursing through every nerve of your body.
Seeing your huddled up position, concern hastily spread from Todoroki’s body. Did he do something wrong?
“(Name)-“
“I love you too.” You cut off his apology, revealing your embarrassed face to his shocked one. “I’m sorry I came off so weird. I just really really like you.”
The heavy tension in the room broke like a wire. A clear smile appeared on your boyfriend’s thin fair lips that could melt an entire glacier. The rush from before of wanting to be with him forever suddenly came back tenfold. But you did your best to contain it.
“Don’t be. I really really like you too.” He laughed, scooting closer to sit adjacent to you on the bed.
If you weren’t so sick right now, you would envelop your lover into a bear hug. Instead, you rested your head on his shoulder, slowly and delicately intertwining your fingers with his. He leans into your touch and closes his eyes.
A sincere smile curled on the edges of your lips as you pulled him closer.
Your cold melted away as soon as both of you fell asleep.
