Baby was good at what he did, and there was no point in denying it. There was no situation he couldn’t escape from, no other driver in the world that could compare to him.

There was just one problem: Baby hated his job.

He loved driving. There was a difference. He loved the hum of an engine, the wind whipping through open windows as he sped down highways. What he hated was working for Doc. He hated the lack of freedom that came with driving that he loved so much, instead, he was tethered to the seemingly endless stream of jobs. Baby couldn’t remember the last time he had hit the road without police cars chasing after him, without Doc’s team yelling at him from the backseat.

Baby knew this wasn’t the life for him, no matter how good he was at it. Once he had paid off his debt, he was leaving this part of his life behind, forever.

The only thing that could make everything slightly more bearable was you. Having you in the front seat with him during every robbery almost made crime seem fun, despite how much he wanted to ignore those thoughts. There was something about your loud laughter, your cheers that drove Baby crazy.

That was your relationship in a nutshell. The robber and the getaway driver. Baby knew you loved what you did, he knew all about the thrill you got from running from the police, hands full of cash. You loved the adrenaline rush almost as much as you loved Baby, who got his thrill simply from being with you.

So as Baby’s debt had almost been paid off, Baby became understandably worried about what that meant for your relationship. Did you love him enough to leave behind your life of crime with him? Baby had avoided the topic for the longest time, afraid to hear your answer, but as he finished his last job, he knew he had to talk with you.

You stayed quiet for the longest time after Baby had asked you to leave everything behind and start a new life with him. Baby sucked in a sharp breath, afraid to hear the worst, but instead, a small smile appeared on your face as you replied, “Okay.”

“Okay?” Baby repeated, and you nodded.

“You look surprised.” you remarked.

“I just… didn’t think you’d leave it all behind for me. I didn’t know what to think, actually.” Baby admitted, shrugging. Quietly, he added, “We don’t exactly have a normal relationship.”

“But that’s what makes it so fun.” you grinned, leaning forward as you raised an eyebrow. “Crime or no crime, I still wanna be with you. Remember what we always say?”

A smile appeared on Baby’s face. The words the two of you always repeated, in case anything went wrong, a reassurance that the two of you would always be together through anything.

“In the end,” Baby replied. “It’ll always be you and I.”
