They had learned about shading and colors in primary school, but what really was a color? They knew things about color saturation, which I suppose was important in a black and white world.
All [name] wanted was to know what purple looked like. The word amused them so much.
Would [name] have to learn to distinguish colors from one another, or would they suddenly be full of that information?
[name] didn’t know.
Standing at the bus stop, [name] clutched their grayish umbrella and sighed, looking out into the rain.
Shortly, a boy walked up and sat on the bench behind them. [name] didn’t really take notice at another presence, so they continued to stare out into the rain.
[name] whipped their hair out of their face, and looked over their shoulder.
[name] blinked.
The boy blinked back.
And the world exploded with color.
[name]’s umbrella was red. That’s what red looks like. They looked back at who was now their… soulmate.
His skin was a gorgeous, vivid blue. Nearly… Purple. His eyes were a harsh amber. He was beautiful.
He spoke first. “Hello… I’m Kurt,” he’s German, [name] noted. “Did you, um…”
“Yeah,” they smiled. “I guess we’re, you know.”
“Soulmates?” He flicked his tail. He’s obviously a mutant. Great thing [name] was, too. “Sorry, I did not get your name.”
“Oh, right. I’m [name],” They plopped down next to him, moving the umbrella over him. He smiled and took their hand, kissing it. [name] blushed at the gesture. “Your skin is such a brilliant blue. It’s stunning.”
“I really am sorry about this.” He sighed, looking down.
“Sorry about what?”
“That I’m your soulmate, I suppose?”
[name] could not believe their ears. “Why would you be sorry for that? You seem lovely. And you’re handsome as hell, too.”
“I mean, I’m a mutant, so things will be difficult and—”
“Me too. I’m a mutant, too.”
Kurt’s frown quickly became a smile. “Really?”
[name] leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “We’re in this together.”
