You hadn’t actually looked into your soulmate the day after you’d met him on the roof. Ben had kept his promise about not telling anyone, but every time a member of the Batfamily showed up on the news he’d give you a look. He could see through your dismissive mask and knew you were stressed. Who wouldn’t be stressed about seeing their soulmate avoiding death every night? Part of you wanted to find him again, but the bats didn’t go out during the day often, and going out at night could be risky both of you – you didn’t want to add stress to his job if you somehow got caught in the middle of a fight, and you didn’t want him doing something stupid trying to protect you. He’s Red Robin, when he’s ready, you’ll happily talk to him.
Waiting can be painful, so you upped your tech game to pass time. Keeping close tabs on police reports and criminal activity meant you could give yourself some peace of mind. He was still alive and kicking, making a difference in Gotham. Your sudden interest in technology caught the eye of a few of your teachers, one who then put you forward for a Wayne Industries Competition. The Winner got a paid internship during the summer (and possibly longer if they liked you). You weren’t about to pass that opportunity up, no one with a brain would. You became busy, the ball of stress about him started to untangle and you began to focus on your own future.
Tim wasn’t sure what to do. He’d spoke to Dick and Stephanie about the soulmate situation, but they’d both wanted to kick his ass for letting you just disappear off that roof. They both had forgotten that it was Tim. He didn’t need to ask you questions so he could find you again, the moment you’d touched his face, the programming in his mask had scanned your face and brought up all the information it could find in a quick search. He’d expanded the search the next day, setting up alerts for if your name or face ever appeared in anything.
He’d tried to keep you out of his head other than that, he was Red Robin, he was a bat, Bruce had never bothered with soulmates (then again, Bruce had met Selina years back and just be a stubborn idiot.) Tim had always said he had wanted to be better than Bruce. Dick had Babs, and Dick was the person everyone trusted. Dick was happy, or at least he always seemed happy.
Tim had walked past your school a few times. He’d spend his day watching people be weird and coupley, he’d see some photos of Dick and Barbara together and become emotional. His friends would ask why he never wanted to find the person, convinced he was hiding his soulmate somewhere. He’d cave and pluck up the courage to talk to you. Then your school bell would ring, students would start flooding out of the building and he’d wimp out.
Surprisingly enough, he found Jason the most helpful family member.
“She respected your boundaries, she gets the game we’re playing. You’re lucky.” Jason had said through the comm. Jason liked to talk about Gossip whenever he needed Tim for a mission. Apparently, it improved his aim. “You’ve internet stalked her already right?”
“What!” It might have been true but he didn’t have to tell Jason that.
“You’re Tim Drake, which means that reaction’s a yes. She seems like a good match?”
“She just won a Wayne Competition, she’s going to be in the tech section all summer.”
“Great match then.”
“I’m going to have to avoid her and then Bruce will start asking questions.”
“Or she’ll never look at her wrist since she knows her soulmate’s running around dressed as a bird. You meet her briefly and then decide whether you want to tell her yet.”
“You make it sound so simple.”
“It is simple. And, Bruce probably already know’s because you always use the Batcomputer and never clear your history.”
“(Y/N), I’m here for the first day of my internship?” you asked the front desk lady carefully. Tim had been in Bruce’s office when he saw you walk through the door, he was supposed to be working with Lucius today anyway so Bruce didn’t question his sudden need to leave.
“Wonderful, do you have the forms you were sent?”
“Already submitted them.” He was casually grabbing some files for Lucius, which he had strategically left in a desk drawer.
“Then I can start your tour, after the tour you’ll receive your company badge and be set up with Lucius Fox.”
“Don’t worry Cathy, I can tour her for you.” Tim felt himself fiddling with the edge of his blazer. He had been rehearsing the lines in his head all morning. “I’m heading to Lucius anyway and I’m sure he won’t mind me being slightly delayed.”
Cathy gave him a strange look. Tim didn’t usually get involved with the newer employees until they were officially in for the long term. She looked at his wrist (he might have pulled the sleeve up so she could see it slightly), confirming her suspicions, but it wasn’t her place to judge or tell. She was paid to keep Wayne secrets.
“Welcome to Wayne Enterprises, you’re the tech winner right?”
“Uh, yeah, (Y/N), but your Tim Drake so you probably already knew that. Working with Lucius and all, you were probably involved in my background check.” If only you knew. He felt himself smiling, the static feeling he’d felt on the roof returning. His fingers were tingling, his compass was spinning like crazy. He was with his soulmate.
“Just a little bit, how’d you get into this stuff, your profile showed you started recently?”
“Police. I started tracking criminal activity and made a code that made watching criminal movements easier – outlining when peak crime times where and where they happen, also why. Used it to phone the police when things were happening in my town and around my school. Commissioner Gordon told a teacher about the opportunity and he entered me.”
“Why track criminal activity?” you shrugged and looked away from him. Your smile was cute, and your cheeks were slightly pink.
“It gave me peace of mind.”
Your phrasing was very precise and he suddenly understood Dick. The constant energy and need to express himself without coffee. The happiness that infected you when you were around your soulmate. He couldn’t keep this up for long. You’d only been in the elevator together and he needed to tell you before you were surrounded by people and busy with Lucius.
“Red Robin?” he asked, his voice going awkwardly high. He noticed your ears twitch slightly.
“What?” you faced him again. To any random stranger being overly curious, he’d have no reason to believe you were connected to Red Robin at all. Tim felt a bit of relief, you could keep a secret believably.
“Red Robin. Rooftop with a friend called Ben?” he held his arm and pulled the jacket sleeve down, showing you the spinning compass. You looked at your own wrist and your eyes widened.
He didn’t expect you to hit him on the arm. “Please don’t tell me I only got this offer because of you!”
“Not the reaction I was expecting, but no, I had no say in it! Promise!” he held up both of his arms.
You started laughing, and he joined in. “Sorry, I’ve been trying not to think about it.” you bit your lip, looking at his face without the mask on. “Let me redo my reaction, please, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you!” he was still laughing slightly but nodded. “Oh my god! Thank god you’re not dead!” then she hugged him tight.
He hadn’t expected that either. You were warm, and seemed to fit perfectly in his arms. The energy disappeared. He didn’t feel like he was going to explode anymore, he felt grounded. Completely Full, and awake
– This ended up being way longer than I originally planned😅 and I had a lot of fun writing it! Thank you to everyone who wanted another part 😊 xx Scarlett
