It had been instinct, saving that old woman. If you had been a second slower, shown even the slightest hesitation, then she would have been killed by the oncoming truck. As it was, you ended up dropping your shopping all over the road and fracturing your ankle, but a few bumps and bruises were worth it if it meant saving someones life.

She had thanked you profusely, but eventually you had managed to escape her almost frantic gratitude, and slip away with the paramedics. You had thought that would be the end of it.

Two days and a plane trip later, you were in another country, glad to be finally having the trip you had been looking forward to, even if you weren’t as mobile as you would have liked. Limping around was going to be a bother.

While you were carefully making your way down a side street, looking forward to resting in your motel room, you found yourself suddenly freezing in place. To your shock, the little old lady stepped into your line of sight, smiling happily at you.

“I wanted to thank you properly dear” The woman spoke, stepping closer to you.

You tried to speak in return, but your voice had been silenced and no matter what you did, you couldn’t move an inch. The woman smiled brightly, perking up.

“Now, what is it you desire hm? Wealth? hm no that’s not it, time? Close but no…” She murmured to herself. She didn’t seem to need you to speak, seemingly grasping the answers from elsewhere, and ignoring your rising panic.

“Love? Oh! A soulmate!” She perked up, practically bouncing in place.

“Yes! Yes! Perfect! A life for a life! How fitting! Very well, a soulmate it shall be!” She tittered happily, appearance changing with every passing moment, no longer that of an old woman, but something…other.

The air seemed to thicken for a moment as she rolled her hands around each other, a strange thrumming power gathering and swirling around them, before abruptly slamming them into your chest. The world ripped itself apart from under you, sending you spinning and rushing through grasping darkness for what felt simultaneously like seconds and hours, before suddenly landing with a hard thump, uninjured, but sore.

As you groaned in pain and slowly opened your eyes, you found yourself staring up at someone you knew could not exist. They were a beloved favourite character of yours after all. Both of you shivered as something seemed to snap in place between you.

At least they looked just as bewildered as you felt.
